About Ars Sancta

A digital sanctuary dedicated to the sacred visual heritage of the Church.

Ars Sancta is a digital archive of sacred Catholic painting, from Byzantine icons to Baroque canvases: works that shaped the visual heritage of the Church and of Western civilization. Every painting in the collection is in the public domain, and may be viewed, downloaded and used freely, including in commercial projects, with no account, no watermark and no cost.

This heritage is scattered across the databases of many museums, each with its own interface and its own way of organizing things. Ars Sancta gathers sacred paintings in one place, organized by saint, scene and artist, so that they are easy to find, study and share. We believe that the beauty created for the glory of God belongs to all the faithful, and to anyone moved by it.

What You Will Find Here

✦

Our growing collection spans Byzantine icons, early Netherlandish panels, Renaissance altarpieces, and the dramatic canvases of the Baroque.

Each painting is offered in high resolution, so that the brushwork, craquelure and texture of the original can be seen up close, and can be downloaded directly, with no account, no watermark and no cost.

Our Principles

✦
I

Free for everyone

Browsing and downloading will never be placed behind a paywall or an account. To keep the archive fast and available to all, we limit very large automated downloads; ordinary use is never affected, and if you need more, just write to us.

II

No advertising

Ars Sancta is a space for contemplation, not for banners, commercial popups, and aggressive trackers. The sacred deserves reverent silence.

III

Public domain, honored

The paintings we publish are in the public domain, and we claim no rights over the images. What belongs to everyone remains everyone’s heritage.

IV

Fidelity to the original

Every image is the museum’s own digital photograph of the work, unaltered: never retouched, recolored, upscaled or generated by artificial intelligence. Each painting links back to its museum, so you can always compare it with the source.

With Gratitude

✦

Our images and records come from the open-access programs of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cleveland Museum of Art. We are deeply grateful to them for sharing this heritage with the world.

An Independent Project

✦

Ars Sancta is an independent initiative, maintained with care and at personal cost: servers, storage and countless hours of curatorship. We accept no advertising and do not charge for access to the collection.

If this archive is useful to you and you wish to help it grow, you can support the project; contributions help cover its costs and the time needed to keep it growing.
