Curatorial Notes

Painted in the early 1480s, this work depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, accompanied by Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Saint Barbara, and two musical angels. On the left, Saint Catherine, identified by the sword and wheel of her martyrdom, extends her hand to receive a ring from Jesus, symbolizing her mystical marriage to Christ, an expression of her spiritual union with the Savior. On the right, Saint Barbara appears reading a book, with the tower of her imprisonment in the background. A kneeling man on the left, whose identity remains unknown, commissioned the painting and is shown praying the Rosary before the sacred scene. Memling adapted the composition from a large altarpiece he had completed in 1479 for Saint John's Hospital in Bruges, now preserved in the institution's museum. A particularly interesting detail was revealed by technical examinations: the vine-covered structure above the Virgin was not part of the original composition, having probably been added in the early 16th century. The grapes symbolize the Eucharist and the blood of Christ, reflecting the growing Eucharistic devotion of that period.
